Oh yeah, now I'm really a runner... Posted: Thu Jan 06, 2005 3:36 pm

I got my rear out of bed at 4:30AM and took a 4 mile run with my trusty canine sidekick Buster. Temperature? 8 degrees. Runner's who read this think "big deal, I do it all of the time". But that's my point: runners think that and do that. A non runner (people where I work) think that I must be clinically insane. It was a great run. I feel like I have crossed the Rubicon, no turning back now!

Dayum!

I ran in 40 degree weather in shorts this morning and felt all tough. Hats off to ya!

Wow, I don't think my alarm functions at 4:30AM...

Wow. I don't think I've ever run when it was anywhere near that cold. I could probably come up with a dozen or more great reasons not to....so my hat's off to you.

Yep, I'm a non-runner, and I'll certify you as clinically insane...

Thanks. But it really wasn't bad. As long as you are wearing a knit cap over your ears, gloves, and warm pants and shirt(s), it's not bad. Just as long as you are running. I'm a baby about the cold, but you really do generate alot of heat when you are running. I have sat in deer stands for hours and thought that I was literally going to freeze to death in conditions that were warmer than what I ran in. The difference is that if you are just standing around or sitting, you actually will freeze. Another great excuse to run!

My favorite reaction from non-runners is when I said I went for an easy 10 miler on Saturday.

Back when I lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, it was routine to go on a long run in -38 weather. I think we still used Fahrenheit in Canada at the time, but at that temperature, Fahrenheit, Celsius, it's all the same: cold. Some of the best runs I've ever done--brilliant sunshine, ice crystals in the air, frosty balaclava mask...it was all good. The I'd tell someone I went for a 3-hour run in tights in -38 and they'd look at me as if I'd lost my mind.

The other thing I notice is that non-runners have no idea how far "far" is. When I'm travelling, I'll ask a hotel clerk or concierge where to run, and they pull out a nice little 2-mile jogging route or tell you that there's a great river path, but it's all the way across town. Turns out "all the way across town" is 1.5 miles.

You are sick. Have you considered seeking professional help? :-)

Yes, I've noticed this as well. That's one reason I especially like point-to-point runs and races, because you actually go somewhere, over a distance that's pretty impressive for most people. For instance, CIM runs from Folsom to Sacramento in California. That's a pretty good haul, equal or longer than many people's daily commutes, and gets a lot of looks of disbelief from non-runners.

My reaction is the same as Rickshaw's...yeah, the 8 degrees must have been pretty unpleasant, but 4:30am! That's not morning, that's night time!
