Dipsea Race Posted: Mon Jan 03, 2005 7:11 pm

Has anyone ever done the Dipsea Race across the Marin headlands near San Francisco? I hiked part of the trail today, and it is absurdly rugged and steep-- I can't believe that people actually race this route. The trail is so narrow in most parts, I don't see how passing is even possible. If you've done it, what was your experience like?

I have two friends at work who ran a double-dipsea training run (not the actual race) a few weeks ago. One of the guys is an ultra-marathoner, so he is insane, but the other one is only slightly insane.

My knees were hurting just walking the dang thing from all the stairs (if you can call slippery logs stairs). While I can sort of imagine running it as a training run, racing it with 1500 other people, where you have to pass people on a one-person, steep decline with a severe drop to boulders on one side and the weirdos doing double (or quad(!) ) dipseas are going in the opposite direction... the racers must be completely off their rocker. I don't know how this race has managed to stay so popular for so long (except that it's probably some of the finest scenery you'll see on the planet. Hmm, maybe that has something to do with it?)
