I'd always thought that runners should avoid heavy weight lighting, because their goal wasn't to build huge, bulging muscles. Low weight, high reps is the advice I've seen for runners who want to work with weights. I noticed that the most recent Runner's World says just the opposite, though. They recommend you choose a weight heavy enough that you can only do 8 to 12 reps before you're unable to continue. Anyone know what the basis for that is? Who here does weight training, and what kind of system do you follow?

I noticed that in RW too. I currently do the first approach...basic free weight stuff with light weights at high reps. Any time I do anything with heavy weights I get a sore neck and/or back, likely because I don't have good form i know, but i don't like heavy lifting nevertheless.

Do you find that the lifting helps you a lot? Do you do mostly lower body stuff, or all over? I don't do any weight training or core strength exercises, although I probably should.

i do zero lower body stuff beyond running. i just started doing upper body stuff in the last month +. in my marathons and longer long runs last year i got some fatigue in my upper body and this is an attempt to alleviate that. i haven't done anything that long to see if it's working, but i do see a difference in my upper body, even doing just a little bit makes a difference from doing absolutely nothing in the past. i've never done any core strenghthening either, but agree i probably should too.

I do a little weightlifting to kind of keep my body toned. I have 9 pair of dumbbells that go from 5 lbs to 45 lbs each, along with a weight bench that has a leg curl/extension attachment. About the only lower-body execises I do are leg extensions and leg curls about twice a week. I do bench presses, presses, rowing, and curls for the upper body about twice a week also. I've always done between 6-12 reps per set. Never cared much for doing more than 12 reps.

What does your lifting do for you-- are you pretty muscular? The reason I've always seen for runners to avoid heavy weights is that wihle more strength is good, more muscle mass (especially in the uppper body) may not be. Certainly the world's best runners tend to be pretty waif-like. Alan Webb is the only top runner I can think of who's fairly muscular.

No, I'm sure not muscular. I have the wrong genetics for that. I'm overweight but that's not because of muscle; it's because I like to eat, especially ice cream. I don't drink and I don't smoke, so I figure I'm entitled to at least one vice. The weightlifting is more because I tend to feel stronger when I do some sort of a strength program. If I go a couple weeks without doing the leg exercises, my legs seem more tired. Also, I just feel that lifting weights is probably good for an overall fitness program.
