Malaika 5K race report 11/18 Daily all in one...

Malaika 5K trail run this morning. Very good morning for a run and a great turnout! This is only the 2nd time this race has been put on and it is very organized. Great wicking T-shirt and all of the registration fee goes toward a poor village in Africa.
My goal was 22 minutes or better (I ran a 22:58 last year).
Mile 1: Started out fine, felt like a good pace hit mile 1 at 7:06. Cool, now just hold this pace...
Mile 2: Couldn't hold the pace with some of the hills, so just ran a little outside of the comfort range, 7:21...
Mile 3: Uh-oh, 7:21!!! I'd better pick it up if I'm going to come in under 22 minutes. I pick up the pace and try to catch the guy ahead of me. The scenery is great running along the Salt Creek in Oak Brook, Il. There is a waterfall and an old mill.....concetrate on pace. Hit mile 3 in 7:10, that's better, but is it enough???
Mile 3.1: I ran the last .1 in 39 seconds flat! Not enough, tough right turn just before the finish on tree bark surface, almost wipe-out making the turn, but I'm done.
Finish Time: 22:17 .... I'll take it out on the trails on a beautiful morning and 41 seconds faster than last year.

Great job, mrbill! That's a fast trail 5k, and I CANNOT believe where you ran it: I grew up in Westchester, about 10 mns from Salt Creek/Oakbrook! Small world.
Way to go on breaking last year's finishing time!

Excellent race! It sounds like it was a beautiful morning for it. Fall racing is the best. You kicked it down in the last mile, and raced to catch the guy ahead of you, giving it a good fight. Congratulations!
