caffeine-powered training
Posted: Thu Jan 20, 2005 10:55 am
I have to admit I get grumpy without my morning coffee. Along the same lines, I use caffeine-fortified energy gels during my longer training runs to help keep going. I know other runners who won't touch caffeine, though. How do most people approach coffee/caffeine and their running? Runworks has an article about
the effects of caffeine
last month, and the general consensus seemed to be that it was a safe performance booster in normal dosage levels. Do you drink coffee etc. before a race?

Yes, but only because I feel like crap in the morning without it, and not because I think it will help me in the race. However, it's a known diuretic, so that's a downside. I understand that the diuretic impact is far less significant among daily coffee drinkers, though, so perhaps that's only an issue for someone who's drinking coffee specifically for that "performance boost."

Double espresso before morning runs and races. Or any other morning for that matter. Afternoon and evening runs are decafe.

For those who normally drink coffee in the morning anyway, I wonder if coffee before a race actually provides a performance boost, or simply prevents a performance collapse. Hmmm.

I don't use caffeine or any other booster, because I want my performance to be from me not from my cup or bottle.
