Save the date Posted: Tue Jan 04, 2005 7:25 am

So the last few days I've been planning out my 2005 racing schedule and almost signed up for a race on a weekend a good friend of mine is getting married. I had already signed up for my marathon though and luckily don't have any conflicts yet, but it brought up a question.... Anybody ever had to make a choice between a race they were training for and some other social commitment? Which did you choose?

Interesting question. Fortunately most "can't miss" events like weddings are announced well ahead of time, otherwise us runners would be in a lot more trouble. Now matter how important a race was to you, I don't think you'd get much sympathy or understanding if you decided to skip a friend's wedding because of it. In the worst case of an unexpected conflict, you can almost always find an alternate marathon to do the week before or after the one you'd originally planned, if you can handle the extra travel and expense.

Being a horrible procrastinator I usually send in my race applications at the last minute, even up to race day sign up, this seems to limit any conflicts. But once I apply I do the race.
