Rochester Area's Largest 10k Rating: 4 Posted: Wed Jan 26, 2005 3:34 pm |

I've run this race about 5 times now starting back in 1997, and although the course has changed a number of times over that period, it's always been one of the Rochester area's best 10k's. Of course, that's not saying too much, because for some reason all race directors ever seem to want to put together around here are 5k's, so there are only half a dozen or so 10k's here throughout the year. The current start/finish of the Lilac 10k is in Highland Park, which is home to the Lilac Festival - a two week event celebrating Highland Park's hugely spectacular collection of lilac bushes. Traditionally the race takes place on the final weekend of the festival in middling-to-late May, and temps have ranged from the low 40's to the 80's at race time. I think this usually attracts about 1500 runners. Traffic control is reasonably good. On major roads we get a closed lane dedicated to us, rather than the whole road, but that's not bad, and much of the race winds through attractive neighborhoods. This is a largely flat course, although the final 1/4 mile to the finish is one long gradual uphill. Decent food afterwards, and you've got the whole Lilac Festival to explore afterwards if you want. This is probably considered by many to be Rochester's premier running event.
