Hawk attack Posted: Wed Jan 05, 2005 5:55 pm

While I was out on a trail run up through the canyons today, I came across something unexpected. Rounding a turn in the trail, I was suddenly nearly face-to-face with a hawk in the midst of thrashing a squirrel. When it saw me, the hawk dropped the squirrel and took off to the branches of a nearby tree, while the limp body of the squirrel rolled down the hill towards me and off into the bushes. This hawk was huge, certainly the largest bird I've ever seen so close outside of a zoo. It's wingspan was probably as big as my arm span, I'd estimate five feet or more tip to tip. What a beautiful bird to see in flight. I'm just glad I didn't end up as its next meal!

I had something similar happen to me once on a run while out of town on business (Kansas City). Kansas City has this breat bike path that goes on and on for ever as it meanders along the highway, through parks and residential areas. I came around a turn to find a hawk dive bombing to catch a field mouse. It was neat to see it dive and pounce on the mouse and then carry it up to a near by branch. I felt bad for the mouse...but it was cool to see nature in action..

Best one I've seen, apart from an eagle diving straight down into the water to snag a fish, is the time we were running along the Stanley Park seawall, and there was an awful racket overhead. We looked up, and there was an eagle, with a juvenile seagull in his talons, going as fast as he could, pursued by a posse of the seagulls relatives, all screaming at him in seagull. Not sure what happened as they went over the trees, but the gulls were gaining on him.
