ice and snow, ho ho ho! Posted: Thu Dec 23, 2004 10:47 am

Looks like another massive storm across the midwest today, with temperatures down below zero. If anybody's traveling today, good luck! And if you do go for a run, remember to bring your avalance rescue locator with you!

50 degrees at noon today, after being 1 degree just a few days ago. Went out for a 10-miler in shorts and a long sleeve polypropelene shirt. At 4 miles the skies opened and it POURED! I was soaked to the skin within 30 seconds, and the wind did a 180 and started roaring. After a few minutes the rain let up to a continuous light shower, and the rest of my run was a powerful tribute to the warming abilities of polypropelene. I think I'd have frozen if I'd been wearing a long sleeve cotton t-shirt, but as it was I was warm enough (although my hands got cold). I never realized just how much of a tremendous difference those synthetic fibers make.

It's down to 28 degrees six hours later, and is supposed to hit zero Christmas night. Talk about your crazy weather patterns!

Dang! It's amusing, but seriously you are correct in saying that you could have frozen. Well, hypothermia anyway. And if you were five miles out and had to turn around with just a wet cotton t-shirt, it could have been dangerous. Im going to have to get me one of those polypropelene shirts! Anyway, I'm glad you made it OK. Weather is such a fickle thing!
