It looks like most of the northeast has gone into a deep freeze today, with temperatures in the single digits: Current Temperatures Map

For those of you in the frozen north, how are you handling the cold during your runs? I always know it's time to go inside when my nostrils freeze together.

Most of Canada is in a warning state, my mom said temperatures were at -33 Fahrenheit with wind chill! Plus I'm going home in a few days.. Hurrah for the Canadian winter!!

I wimped out and didn't run at all. Monday's my normal off day, though, so it didn't matter. Ran on the treadmill indoors on Sunday when it was already getting really cold and windy.

For me the colder weather simply means changing from my lighter Hind Drylete winter shirt to my heavier Hind DryLete winter shirt. That combined with my wind breaker, running pants, hat and gloves does the trick for me.

I have complained before about not having proper gear to run outdoors. Well, my mom bought me some polar-tec fleece pants. I guess they are for running in, I don't know. Anyone have any experience running in fleece? It would seem to repel water. I'm not sure. But they are warm.

Actually, unless it's REALLY cold and windy (ie. windchill pushing zero) my legs are the least of my worries. I've got a pair of great New Balance gortex-type windpants that I wear with just shorts underneath throughout the winter, and when it's just 30 or so I'm usually sweating. Fleece might be a more comfortable, more breathable layer on those sorts of days, but on colder/windier day you may want a wind resistant layer over them.

I do have a pair of running tights that I've worn several times, and they're actually the most comfortable thing I've ever run in during the winter. However, I eventually have gotten to the point wear I feel too silly wearing them, even with shorts over the top. Any other guys posting here who run in tights, or who used to but stopped, or who wouldn't be caught dead in them, who care to comment?

I with you on the tights thing. What I have considered doing is buying the compression shorts and wear regular running shorts on top. That way you don't have to worry about vaseline or whatever for the long runs (that's my theory anyway). I used to see this old man run wearing bright red tights. I thought they looked ridiculous. I'm pretty modest though. :)

I'm a group leader of about a dozen women on a Sunday long run marathon clinic, and after listening to them appraise the passing men in tights, I wear shorts over the tights.

Count me in the ex-tights group too. I definitely felt pretty self-conscious in them, plus the ones I had were about as warm as wearing nothing at all. I nearly froze some important equipment during a Boston bridge loop last winter.

I'm a tights-guy when temps are below 40 F. I have a pair of "not so tights" which are slightly baggy and also a pair of black, traditional tights. A carload of college-age girls hooted and whistled at me while I was wearing them once, but I couldn't tell if sarcasm was involved.

Laughed my butt off on that one! That's pretty much why I don't wear them. That, and the ridicule from non-running guys about any man who would wear tights! Guess I'm not all that self-confident, huh?
