Badwater! Posted: Mon Jul 24, 2006 9:06 am

The Badwater 135 race started this morning at 6am: 135 miles in 120 degree temps. This was the race I was supposed to do a documentary about, following Scott Jurek's quest to break 24 hours. Unfortunately, the network decided against picking it up because it was, "Too niche."

Meanwhile, I can watch dominoes on ESPN.

Go Scott! Best of luck to everyone out there!

I didn't know they'd decided not to go with your show. That's too bad! I hope you've found some other interesting projects instead.

It's been feeling a little like Badwater around here this past week. We normally have pretty temperate weather near San Francisco, but it's been pushing 100 every day for the last while. It was 108 here on Saturday. I tried to do a long run on Sunday morning when it was 86, glaring sun, no shade, and no wind. It felt like one of those old Western movies where dessicated cattle collapse and die in the desert heat. I'd planned to do 20 miles, and struggled to do 8 at a 10:00 pace. Ugh.

Thanks, and yes, I've been overly-employed lo these last 4 months...which will end soon, and then the panic settles in.

Right now, it's 98 degrees in Death Valley, and those 80 + souls are out there slugging it out. Scott, if all goes as planned, will finish in >8 hours, which mean I will have woken up and started my morning run after he's snapped the tape (fingers crossed). The field is filled with legendary runners this year: Karnazes, Pam Reed, Scott, and teh weather is HORRIFIC. Should make for an interesting race.

Wow, that hot in the Bay area? We hit 109 in the Valley last weekend, my 2 hour trail run (by the ocean to keep it cooler, no less) reduced to 1 hour run and then 45 mns in the pool.

Stay hydrated, everyone!

Welp, Scott Jurek did it again, placing first at 25:41. He didn't beat his own course record, but he proved, once again, what a superhuman he is!

Everyone else is faring well, it looks like from the web postings, especially considering that the heat this year is far worse than normal.

Jurek is amazing. It's surprising that he doesn't get anywhere near the attention that dominant athletes in other sports do, even compared with other running events like road racing.

He really is. And incredibly cool. When I sent an email to him pitching the idea to document his training for the race and the race itself, he called me back within a week, listened to my idea and immediately said, "As long as I can just live my life and you shoot it, I'm totally up for it!"

Can you imagine having that kind of access to a Lance Armstrong or Tiger Woods?

Well, maybe next year.
