going to the bathroom Posted: Sun Dec 12, 2004 11:54 am

I used to have no problem "holding it" on my long training runs, even up to 20-22 miles. As long as I went beforehand, I was fine. Recently, though, I've found that the urge to pee often strikes during my long runs no matter what I do to avoid it, and I end up stopping once or twice along the way. Fortunately this hasn't been a problem in any of my races yet, but it's probably only a matter of time until it is. Anyone else have this problem? What's your secret for avoiding potty stops?

This is another reason I run trails. There's always a tree with your name on it.

On my training runs there are spots with relative privacy so when I have to go I go. I find in races that no matter how often I go before the race starts I still need one more trip to the tree in the first mile. After that no problem. Its either over-hydrating or nerves (or maybe a combination). I don't really want to cut down on what I drink before a race so I guess I'll have to live with the results. I'm not fast so the impact on my time is not relevent.

Fortunately the need has never struck me during a race. And anyway as you said, an extra minute or two during a longer race isn't a big deal, especially if you're on the slow side to begin with. But what would you do if you were in a marathon, hunting for your Boston qualifying time, and you suddenly had the urge to pee? I've heard that faster runners will wait until just before an aid station, then just let it out while continuing to run. Then grab a cup of water, pour it on your crotch, and you're as good as new! :-)
