what other sports do you enjoy? Posted: Tue Jul 05, 2005 11:26 am

I willing to bet that most runners are also active in other sports. What other sports do you enjoy most?

Personally I've never been a big fan of team sports, probably because I'm bad at them and don't like being the worst player out there. I find that I gravitate towards other individual endurance sports. I did some cross country skiing last winter and thoroughly enjoyed it. This past holiday weekend, I also bought myself a bicycle (my first since college) and had a great time zooming around the local bike paths. Hiking and backpacking have always been favorties of mine too. Maybe I should give swimming a shot-- that's the only individual endurance sport I can think of that I haven't already tried.

Rickshaw, I enjoy a couple of sports that are very conducive to living here in Colorado. I love to hike in the mountains, and there are plenty of trails here. I also love mountain biking, although I've had my share of crashes over the years. As a typical male, I have found myself at times exploring new territory and getting lost or biting off more than I can chew. I always get back to square one but only after wearing myself to a frazzle and having less than an enjoyable excursion.

For that kind of hiking, I find a GPS to be pretty valuable. Mark your starting location, and you can easly find your way back no matter how lost you get. You can find your way back without one too, but it's more guesswork. Having the GPS just gives an extra sense of security.

I got into running in 1996 to increase my cardio and improve my performance in breath holding spearfishing and freediving. Also in order to give some rest to my begginers running aches I also started road bycicling. Nowadays running and racing are my main sport activities being spearfishing-frrediving and bycicling second.

How interests change during the years.

I got i nvolved in triathlons for the first time this past summer. I participated in three really great non-competative sprint triathlons ( 1/4 mile swim, 10.5 mile bike, 3 mile run) hosted by a nearby Tri club (www.sandyhookers.com). These were organized more as practice triathlons for first timers as well as for experienced triathletes who used them as training workouts. There was a clock at the finish but you had to track your own time and splits and record them yourself. The times were then posted on their web site so that you could track yourself from one event to the next and compare yourself with the rest of the group. No awards were given out but they provided t-shirts and lots of food afterwards. It a was great way to get introduced to this sport and I 've become hooked. About a monthy after completing the third practice triathlon I participated in a competative sprint triathlon. I ended up doing pretty well considering I was one of maybe two people riding a mountain bike while everyone else rode nice aerodynamic tri bikes.

Training for a triathlon definitely helped break up the monotony of marathon training. But of course it requires more time for training. I think I managed to strike a pretty good balance (swimming or biking on off or easy days). But I can see where it can eat up a lot more time (and money) the more serious you get about it.

I strongly encourage any runner looking for a new challenge, or just something new, to try a short distance Triathlon (Sprint).
