Vasoline vs BodyGlide vs Compression Shorts
Posted: Tue Mar 29, 2005 9:34 am
I have used vasoline for some medium distances, but never on a really long run. I got turned onto BodyGlide and have used that exclusively ever since. My problem is that when I go on a 20 miler, I still get chafed. Even after liberally applying BodyGlide. Would vasoline work better? Worse?
I had just about resigned myself to getting some wicked burns when I run the OKC marathon in late April, but then the idea of compression shorts hit me. I would wear them
under
my baggy shorts, natch. :o)
Does anyone have experience with these kind of shorts? Are they good at preventing chafing or is this something that I will just have to live with?
BodyGlide works great up to probably a 15 miler for me, then it's less than spectacular. Suggestions? Comments?

I, too, have a problem with chafing. I have some BodyGlide and Vasoline but I always forget to put it on, so I can't say which really works better. I bought some compression tights a couple months ago and wear them on my longer runs. I didn't particularly buy them for any chafing problems, but I have found that I don't get any chafing when I wear them. Of course, I'm not a marathon runner. The most I generally run are half marathons and my long training runs generally are around 10-13 miles.
Anyway, that's my experience. I would think that compression shorts would help a great deal.

That's great. Thanks for sharing your experience. I need to make that investment I guess. Either that or start a forest fire in my shorts on April 24th. :o)

Chafing used to be a big problem for me. I tried Vasoline and Body Glide but nothing has worked as well as wearing boxer briefs under my shorts. They're a lot like compression shorts but maybe not quite as tight. I've always worn them...up until sometime last year.
I used to have to wear them for all my runs; short and long. Sometime early last year I decided it was becoming a pain to always wear two pairs of shorts. So, I chose not wear them on my short runs. Some times I'd be fine and sometimes I'd get mildly chaffed. I would go back to wearing the shorts for a few days to let the chaffing heal. But then I would stop wearing them again. I continued doing this as my runs lengthened and I found that I was able to go a bit farther each time without any chaffing. I always went back to wearing the shorts for a few days if I experienced any significant chaffing from a long run. Eventually, I was able to run even a Marathon without any chaffing. I guess over time I just conditioned the skin to be a little stronger...but without developing a callous.
I've been wearing long pants during the winter and haven't run in shorts for some time. So I'm expecting that I may have to start the process over again. We'll see. But the boxer briefs/compression shorts are the way to go.

The type of clothing I wear makes a huge difference in chafing for me. Light, breathable materials like Coolmax or Dri-fit work great, and I get little if any chafing. But anything made of cotton or lycra or polyester seems to be bad news for me. I once got a terrible case of chafing where I ended up with blood running down my legs... ouch!
The weather makes a difference too. When it's cold and wet, chafing is worse.
For long runs where I'm worried about chafing, I usually use Aquaphor. I think it's similar to vaseline, but a little bit less goopy and messy. Body Glide also works okay, but I prefer Aquaphor since it's easier to lay down a thicker layer.
