 A True Cross Country Race
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Fri Feb 11, 2005 6:41 pm
Get ready for a "cross country" race with a whole new meaning. At last week's Running USA Conference in San Diego, Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray introduced the idea of a Running USA Trans America Relay. The race would feature teams of 10 to 15 crossing the United States, traveling 3300 miles from coast to coast, with each runner covering between 5 and 10 miles per day. McGillivray hopes to hold a race with two or three teams as early as next spring.

The cross country team from Rochester Institute of Technology here in upstate New York ran across the country this past November to commemorate their school's 100th anniversary. I think it took them something like 2.5 weeks, San Diego to Maryland shore. From the newspaper coverage, I guess the biggest issue was that the participants' running gear never got a chance to dry thoroughly between runs. They ran 24 hours a day, something like 1 hour running then six hours off, for 2.5 weeks straight.

I hope this happens. I think it would be great. I also think "Team Runworks" should make an appearance.
