Run Forest Run Posted: Thu Jan 20, 2005 9:07 pm

One of the most annoying things that happen to me while out running is young punks yelling out "run Forest, run" in that goofy fashion just like in the movie Forest Gump. This ever happen to anyone?

Not to me, although I've heard other people report it happening to them. Ah, wit. My best comment was "way to go, stud!" from a woman at UNLV. Judging from the tone of her voice, I'm pretty certain she did not actually think I was a stud. :-(

This is one of the funniest subjects (in my humble opinion) for runners to discuss: What are the strangest things people have yelled at you? Mine are as follows:

• A guy in a van at a stoplight: "I see you every morning. Why the hell are you doing this?"

• An older, creepy looking woman pulling away as I waited at a stoplight one cold morning in my running tights: "Nice bulge." (!!!)

• A fat guy at a bus stop: "Homo!"

• Countless times: "Get a car!"

Anyone else?

Heh! The folks in my neighborhood aren't nearly that inventive (or creepy).

Older guy as I ran past him for the second time: "show off!"

I try not to run along streets and instead do most of my running on trails or on a limited access road in a nearby park. But I see a fair number of people on foot and though they don't usually say much to me other than hello there is this one older gentleman who really gets on my nerves. He's the type of person who will just strikes up some random conversation with anyone who will listen. Normally, I wouldn't have a problem with this at all but some of his comments are either rude or offensive. Fortunately, I only see him ever once in a while when I find myself running later in the morning than usual. I don't think he recognizes me because EVERY time I run past him he yells to me "back in good old days when I had good knews I used to run 6 miles here, 2 loops on this road."

He says it like he's trying to impress me. Fine..but once was enough. Since I've heard him make other less than endearing remarks I don't take pleasure in talking to him and so I keep my reply to a short "that's great." The last time I saw him (and heard him repeat this for about the 10th time) I thought I could say something to get him to notice me and stop repeating this the next time he saw me. So as I ran past him I simply said "that's nice...but that's just an easy day for me...try doing 12 miles."

Well, I passed him again on my way back around the loop (the first time I've encountered him twice) and this time he started telling me about his 19 year old grandson who had just run the New York City marathon and finished in 186th place. He repeated again that his grandson was only 19. I asked what his time was and he said he didn't know "but he finished in 186th place. Pretty damn good for a 19 year old." I said "Yep," though I was a little skeptical. I had just run the NYC marathon too and so when I returned home I immediately did a search on the NYC marathon results for the top 19 year old finishers. I found that the first 19 year old finished in about 2000th place. Still pretty good but not 186th.

I just know the next time I see him he's going to tell me all over again how he used to run 6 miles on this same road. But I think if he tells me again about his grandson I'm going to have to set him straight.

The comments I receive most come from fellow cadets in ROTC when we have PT... Normally they give us 20 min. to run at what ever pace we want. As of now I'm at a 06:00 per mile,( only good at that pace for 3 miles) Anyway every PT as I run laps on most of the cadets I receive comments like. "over achiever" "your making us look bad" After a few comments like that I'll pick up my pace a little bit more to make that what they say will stay that way... I am now training for my first marathon, "The Flying Pig" in Cincinnati .

Good luck at the Flying Pig. It's a very popular race and everyone I've heard of who has run it before really loved it.

That's funny. I wonder what he was thinking of to confuse 186th place with 2000th. Anyway, it's not like you're going to stop dead in your tracks and chat with him next time you see the guy.

Exactly. He always seems to want to strike up a conversation. That's another pet peeve I've got...people who will stop me during a run along the road in my neighborhood and ask for directions. I feel like saying "Ahhh...I'm worrrking here!" (with a good ol' Bronx ancent).

Oh, I've heard the "run Forrest run" refrain many a time, but then again I have a beard and skraggly hair like Forrest Gump did at that point in the movie, so perhaps it's not such a stretch. I did have a guy at the track tell me that when he grows up he wants to run like I do. That was ok, except that he was REALLY slow and I was only SORTA fast.

Well, mfox, you're doing a kind deed, letting that old guy talk for a moment. A lot of old folks need someone to listen to them.

I used to run past this old guy quite regularly who looked about 120. He would shuffle along very slowly half bent over. I always thought he was trying to talk to me as i ran past him, but he was never quick enough to get out a comment before i went past. One day, however, i stopped to talk to him, and found out he used to be a champion runner in his younger days, and was one of the founding members of my running club. They even have awards named after him!

That's great! I used to live in another city, and there was this guy who would be out running everyday on the sidewalks, always carrying a newspaper. When he approach someone else on the sidewalk he always yell out, "track!" He was just weird. Your guy sounds far more interesting!

Isn't that a skiing term? I've thought that in a multi-lap track race, the leaders actually had to pass lapped runners on the outside lane, instead of the lapped runner yielding the inside.
