Do you cut back or eliminate alcohol when you're training? It seems like common sense, except that many people are nearly always training for something, and so would have to abstain completely. I've certainly found myself drinking less since I started running a few years ago, but I do still have the occasional beer. As long as it's not three of them the night before a race, I don't think it can do too much harm.

I cut back (from 3 glass of wine a night to say 1-2) for weight reasons, but I found I sleep better and that helped me recover faster. Also, I find that running a lot makes it easier for my to sleep, so I don't 'need' a bedtime drink.
- Night before the race, I always do what I normally do. I think drinking a lot could dehydrate you the night before and of course if you drink enough to get a hang over, well ...

I've run out a couple of hangovers and it was PAINFUL. Granted, I felt 100% better after the run, but actually getting myself moving and out the door, manomanoman...

At the 5K I ran today, I overheard this conversation between two guys in front of me:

- Dude, I'm beat.
- Me too... and I need to take a leak!
- Maybe we shouldn't have stayed up all night drinking sake...

I don't drink too much to begin with but I found that I don't feel as good running after I drink so I eliminate all alcohol two days before all long runs and any race. Seems to work for me.

I haven't touched a drop in 14 years, but I will say that I remember being the in the Marine Corps in the early 80's thinking that it would be fun to run PT drunk. So we all went out and got pretty drunk. 4:30AM came mighty early and there wasn't anyone who still believe that this was a great idea. With only a few hours removed from the bars we were still intoxicated. I didn't blow chunks, but a number or other jarheads did. Ahh youth... :o)

A couple years ago I traveled back to my hometown in Ohio one summer weekend to celebrate my big brother's 50th birthday. He had a great big party with a band (he was the lead guitarist), lots of food, people, and alchohol. It so happened there was a 5K being run in my old neighborhood the next day and I decided to run it. I was looking forward especially to running through the same park inwhich I spent much of my childhood. And in addition, I was in the best running shape I'd been in for a long time.

I managed to stay up until about 2 in the morning, well after the party ended, just chatting with family and friends who stuck around after the party. I woke up 4 hours later and, after a short mental debate, I managed to pull myself out of bed and made my way to the starting line just in time. I wasn't hung-over as much as I was just sleep deprived. My legs felt pretty good but boy the rest of me was feeling awfully tired. I went out faster than I should have, thanks to a downhill start. I felt like I was going to die going up the one and only long steep hill. But overall I managed to keep a pretty steady pace and I actually started feeling stronger in the last mile of the race. I ended up running the fastest 5K I've ever run to this day.

I'm afraid to admit what the moral of this story is. I don't intend to find out if the experience is repeatable. But...if I do find myself out late the night before a race (short) I'll try not to worry and remember that if I did it once I might be able do it again.

I had just the opposite experience. We had a family get together at my house two summers ago. Lots of food and drink although for me it was more food than drink. The party broke up around 11:00 so sleep wasn't an issue for me. I woke up around 6 for my 18 mile run and felt totally bloated. Long story short, I struggled for the first 2 1/2 miles at which point I decided circle back and run only 5 miles. I guess if I was in a race I would have pushed myself more and may have overcome my discomfort but since this was a training run I bagged it and did the run the next day.

All I can say is:

Runner's Trots + Beer Sh!ts = Bad news

It took one time to learn this lesson the hard way. I had a five mile training run I sprinted the last mile of to get to a restroom, just in the nick of time. Never again.

I have had various instances when alcohol has been involved in my running: before, after, and during running. Firstly, i think that sipping a few beers after a long race is a good method of replenishing carbohydrates, but be sure to drink plenty of water as well. Also, after a big night out the night before the first race of the season, i ran one of the quickest 4mile races of my life. I have also ran twice while actually being drunk! The first was a training session of about 1 hour after a few beers at the football. Needless to say i struggled, but the run was quite funny. The second time i competed in a race after a huge night out, no sleep, and still drunk at the start line. Once again, despite consuming 2 redbulls prior to starting, i did not run very quickly. However, it was quite an experience to be around serious runners while in this state.

I'll bet! I can see the potential for drinking before and after running, but during? You must like punishment! Or is a beer every mile your version of the carrot to motivate you to keep going?

The Midnight Run in Central Park, held at midnight on New Years Eve every year, has champaign at the halfway point. I ran this race one year and it was so cold the drinks were partly frozen...all but the alchohol. Not a very enjoyable during a run...or any other time I'm sure.

I carefully avoid alcohol the day & night before a marathon. Other than that, I scrupulously avoid drinking alcohol while running, because I don't want to spill it. Isn't that what the Hash House Harriers is all about, though? I think we actually have a group of them around my locale here somewhere.
