If you've read my other posts, you know I have some problems doing interval workouts at my local high school's track. People going the wrong way and sports teams doing practices always seem to be in the way. I've tried using my Nike speed + distance monitor to do intervals on the road, but it's tough to find a spot that's flat and unobstructed enough-- there's always a hilll, or an intersection, or something that makes it impossible to keep a steady pace. For those of you that do some kind of interval training, like 6 x 1200 meters at such and such a pace, where do you do it?

i live in chicago and really luck out that i live a block from the lake front path that has mile markers every half mile. i have an iron man gps too, but it goes in and out too much if you're by a building of any size.

Your body doesn't care if you run a precise disance or not, so don't worry about measuring an exact distance. Just find a loop of some kind, e.g. around a city block, and use it for intervals.

That's true that any distance is fine, but if you don't actually know what the distance is it can be a problem. Without some kind of distance measurement, there's no way to know if you're running the intervals at your planned pace, or too slow or too fast. You can still judge by perceived effort, which is better than nothing of course, but numbers geeks like me always want to know the true pace.

You're right, if you want to run intervals at particular paces then you need to know the distance and times. I'm also a numbers geek (electrical engineer, software engineer, advanced class ham radio), but I tend to do most of my running via perceived effort. One exception to this is that I am taking precise measurements of my running distances to update a graph in my site of my distances to illustrate the 10% rule.

I live about a block from our local high school running track. In fact, I do a majority of my running there. I don't mind running in circles; it beats dodging traffic on the roads and it's easier on this old body of mine.
