Redemption in New York for World Record Marathoner
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Fri Dec 03, 2004 1:51 pm
The troubled holder of the top women's marathon time in the world has showed doubters she's still got the right stuff. After a disappointing Olympics where Paula Radcliffe dropped out mid-race from both the marathon and the 10,000 meters, some observers questioned whether she could come back. Radcliffe's nail-biting victory in this year's New York City Marathon proved to the world that she's still got what it takes.

Radcliffe ran near the front the whole way, eventually separating herself from everyone but Susan Chepkemei. The Briton and the Kenyan ran side-by-side during the last few miles, with neither willing to yield any ground. Not until the final yards was Radcliffe able to dig deep and make one last sprint, beating Chepkemei by just 4 seconds. Radcliffe's winning time of 2:23:10 was less than 40 seconds shy of the course record. Her world record time of 2:15:25 was set in 2003 at the London Marathon.

Of course, after the Olympics, it was just nice to watch a marathon where the leader didn't get mugged 3 miles from the finish.

Don't forget Meb! Posted: Mon Dec 06, 2004 10:17 pm

It was also great to see Meb Keflezighi finish second in the men's race. That's the best performance for an American at the New York Marathon in years. Could US distance runners actually be competitive again?
