Griffith Park fires Posted: Wed May 09, 2007 12:50 pm

If you haven't heard, Griffith Park, located about 1-2 miles from my apartment, has been burning for the past 24 hours. Over 600 of the 4,000 acres have been burned, and the fire is currently only 50% contained.

I've logged literally thousands of miles on those trails. In fact, yesterday morning, my girlfriend and I planned on hitting the trails for some night running last night!

I saw it on the news-- looks pretty bad. Is the fire entirely within the park, or is it a much larger fire that just happens to include part of the park? Either way, it doesn't look good.

It's actually inside the park only, as we've only had 4" of rain this past winter, so all of the sagebrush is just tinder, waiting to go off.

It appears about 20% of the park has been damaged. Huge! Going back will be like running on the moon!

And alos, currently burning, are the forests on Catalina Island, where I ran my 50 miler in January.

Apparently, I run so fast that I set every place I run on fire.

Yeah, that was the first thing I thought when I saw the news about Catalina Island this morning. All your trail running favorites are going up in smoke! :-(
