Chocolate Milk: The New Sports Drink?
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Fri Mar 10, 2006 11:17 am
A new study shows that plain old chocolate milk may be as good or better than sports drinks like Gatorade at helping athletes recover from strenuous exercise. Check out the original paper from the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism and some commentary on the results. It seems that chocolate milk works about as well as fluid replacement drinks (like Gatorade) for recovery after a vigorous workout, and both work significantly better than carbohydrate replacement drinks (Endurox). The results were puzzling given that chocolate milk and Endurox have nearly identical nutritional profiles, and both have more carbs and protein than Gatorade. One hypothesis is that the simple sugars in chocolate milk and Gatorade are better recovery aids than the complex sugars in Endurox. It seems that a control group that drank only water would have been a good idea. The study was partially funded by the dairy industry, so the results should be taken with some skepticism. Gatorade has released a statement challenging the claims.
