 100 Meter World Record Broken
Submitted by swrittenb :: Tue Jun 14, 2005 4:33 pm
Jamaica's Asafa Powell set a new 100 meter world record on June 14, clocking a time of 9.77 seconds at Athens' Olympic Stadium. The record came during the Tsiklitiria Super Grand Prix meet, the first major sporting event in Athens since last summer's Olympics. Powell shaved 0.01 off the previous record of 9.78 seconds, set by Tim Montgomery in 2002. "I knew I could break the world record and I am very happy I succeeded," said Powell after the race. "If you ask me what I can do more this year, you will just have to wait until the end of this year's season to see."

It's interesting to note that Powell's record is the equivalent of a 2:37/mile pace. He may only be able to maintain that speed for 10 seconds, but it's still pretty darn impressive.

Not really. You can beat it Rickshaw. Next time you try to climb Mt. Shasta, just slip. I think as you are falling you will eventually reach terminal velocity of 180fps or some such. I'm not sure of the math, but I think you would leave this guy in the dust!

Wasn't there some Joe Isuzu commercial in the '80s about how one of their trucks could go zero to sixty in 5 seconds (when dropped from an airplane?)

I am now imagining sprinters carring ice-axes so the can self arrest at the finish line.
