jacket made of race numbers? Posted: Sun Apr 03, 2005 3:43 pm

hi,
i vaguely recall seeing a website or ad for a place that will take all of your old race numbers and sew them together into a run jacket. but i can't find anything about it on the web. does this ring a bell with anyone?
thanks,
-b

Interesting, I haven't heard of that. I'm not sure how that would work, since most race numbers are just paper or tyvek. The closest thing I'm aware of is an operation that will make a quilt out of old race T-shirts. They advertise in the back of Runner's World.

Actually race numbers should work fine. You can by Tyvek running jackets and pants at most marathon expos (that's the only place I've seen them for sale). I believe the Long Island Marathon either gives a way to all runners (or sells) a special marathon zip up jacket made of Tyvek that has the Marathon logo and course printed all over it.

These things are meant to be cheap and won't hold up to normal wear for very long. In fact, they're sold at Marathon expos mostly as a cheap item (about $7 each for top and bottom) to stay warm before and during the marathon and then you discard it once you get warmed up. Tyvek is the same marterial used as a moisture barrier wrap and insulation for new home construction; before the siding is put on.

The pants I purchased for last year's NYC marathon had the side seems perforated so that you coudl easily tear away the pants while on the run.

Single-use disposable clothing? This must be the 21st century! :-)

Here's an even cheaper alternative - Plastic bags.

I'm not sure if you'd call it "clothing" but I always carry a pair of black plastic trash bags (30 gal or so) in my gear bag. One has two holes cut out at the bottom so I can pull it up over my legs as sort of pants, the other has two holes cut out on the side, near the bottom, and another hold cut out at the center of the bottom so I can pull it over my head and stick my arms out and wear it as a top. They come in handy if the weather is wet or cold. I can slip them on before the race amd wear them until just before the start or whenever I feel I'm ready to remove them and toss them in a trash can.

After preparing the holes I fold the bags back up to how they came out of the box (nice and compat) and slip them in one of the pockets in my gear bag. They stay there until the day comes when I need them.

One or both of these come in handy when either it's cold, it's raining, or everything around you that you want to sit on as you rest before a race is either wet, snow covered, or dirty.

I actually have a list of practical things to carry in my gear bag for races. I go over the list before each race to make sure I have everything.
