A Record Weekend At The Boston Indoor Games
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Tue Feb 01, 2005 2:02 pm
Saturday's Boston Indoor Games saw an explosion of new records and near records, in both the men's and women's events. Was it the extraordinary depth of talent on hand, the fast track surface, or just magic in the air?

Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba set a new women's 5000 meter world record of 14:39.29. She bested the previous record by more than six seconds, despite lagging behind record pace at the 4000 meter mark. She posted a blazing 2:46 for the final kilometer, her fastest of the race by far. Her older sister Ejegayehu finished in second place in the same race.

Athens 5000m gold medallist Meseret Defar missed setting a new 3000m record by less than a second. Defar was on pace for a new record with 600m remaining, but lost time when she briefly became trapped behind two lapped runners.

Michigan runner Nate Brannen ran 3:55.11 for the indoor mile, missing the collegiate indoor record by just 0.11 seconds.
