 More Schools Benching P.E.
Submitted by Bricks :: Thu Jan 27, 2005 2:11 pm
US high schools are increasingly dropping physical education classes, thanks to shrinking budgets and increased academic pressures. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in 2003, only 28 percent of high school students nationwide attended a daily P.E. class. Only 40 percent of high school seniors even attended P.E. one day a week. But 38 percent of high school students watched television for three hours or more each school night. Discouraging news for the next generation of potential runners.

I can't recall exactly, but I think I had PE three days a week during my freshman and sophomore years in high school, and then not at all as a junior or senior. My memory is that the PE classes were pretty good, even for someone like me who wasn't much of an athlete and wasn't on any of the school sports teams. I think I played a lot of badminton.

That's weird, given that we went to the same high school, albeit 9 years apart. We had gym every other day, every year right through senior year. The only folks who could get out of gym were the ones on a varsity team at that time, and most of them went anyway just for fun. Gym was a required activity my freshman year in college, too, at least during the first semester. The focus there was on lifetime sports, though, like golf, tennis, and ice skating. Thankfully, I think New York State is still among the states with the highest requirements for PE classes.

Of course we won't bring up the "remedial gym class" I had to take because I was such an uncoordinated wimp. Except whoops, I just did. Those were the days! :-)
