It's only walking? Posted: Tue Jan 25, 2005 5:50 pm

This weekend I got it in my head to do a solo backpacking trip, so yesterday I set off for Henry Coe State Park, a preserve of former ranch land about two hours south of San Francisco. The elevations in the park range from about 1000 to 3500 feet, and it's quite hilly. Being the glutton for punishment that I am, and assuming that my physical conditioning would let me do anything, I selected the most difficult possible hike: 24 miles round trip to a remote lake and back. I figured it was only walking, how bad could it be?

Well I made it back, but only barely. I have newfound respect for the difficulty of walking when it involves carrying a 40 pound pack up and down absurdly steep trails for hours and hours. My legs are barely functioning today! But on the plus side, now when I go running I'll feel lighter than air without that pack on my shoulders.

I'm happy to report that my legs are recovering nicely today. No blisters either, just a lot of soreness in the legs. There's hope I may survive!

I know what you mean. You definately recruit some muscles that you normally don't use on your runs. Instead of just sitting in a deer stand one day in November, I tried my hand at still hunting (walk 10 feet, stop, look, listen, repeat). I was in some very rugged country and trudged up hills all day. I was absolutely blown away at how sore I was the next day! Pretty funny.
