Running Calculator Updates! Posted: Tue Jan 04, 2005 11:54 pm

I've made some updates to the Runworks running calculator. I've added options to adjust for altitude, temperature, wind, and treadmill inclines, as well as a few more unit conversions. If you have a minute, check it out and let me know what you think. Also please let me know if you encounter any problems.

A couple of minor things I still need to do are change the temperature, wind, and treadmill results to appear in a table instead of as text, and also make it remember the last option you selected if you want to do repeated calculations.

Rickshaw -

Interesting stuff. I agree, though, that you do need to do something to either table-ize the new results, or somehow make them stand out more. I thought my tests of the temperature conversion function weren't working at first, because I didn't even notice the results at the top of the page. Also, don't forget to set the "Calculator" link on the page header to the new version. Right now it's still going to the old one. Good stuff, though.

I don't know if it's a seperate animal, but perhaps a weight/calorie calculator, maybe some heart rate something or other...not sure, just thinking out loud...

I could make something that computes calories burned as a function of weight, distance run, and time. It might not be too interesting though, since it's nearly constant at 100 calories per mile run, regardless of the other values.

Heart rate: maybe something where you enter in your max HR, and it suggests HR ranges for various training types and races?

OK, I've put the results into tables and cleaned up all the loose ends, so I think it's done. If anyone has more suggestions for calculations they'd like to see, shout 'em.

One more update: I've added an option to compute equivalent times for different course elevation profiles. So if you've run a course that's 100 feet downhill, or 100 feet uphill followed by 50 feet downhill, you can see how it converts into a time for a level course, or vice versa. The method is based of research by Tim Noakes that found a slowdown of 0.65 kph per 1% uphill grade, and speedup of 0.35 kph per 1% downhill grade. Check it out, it makes an interesting data table.
