Trail Runner had a short section on showshoeing this month, and even reviewed some snowshoes. It's all very high-tech stuff, not the deer antlers and stretched intenstine I was imagining.
Their advice: First-timers should start on a packed-down area. Brace yourself; it feels clunky at first. As you stride, remember to lift your foot more than usual, since the showshoe's tail drops and needs to clear the snow. Snowshoeing demands a greater, more powerful arm swing. Your pace will be slower than running and your heart rate will max out faster. Settle for a slower pace and build your speed with occasional sprints.
